Job Search Tip #2: New mindset, who dis?
Your mindset is a key 🔑 component of the job search.
When you are feeling down, you are naturally going to gravitate toward negative thoughts and emotions. Feeling down will also block you from taking steps in your job search through action. That means you might not apply to jobs, reach out to people, or make any posts on Linkedin. When you are feeling like “no one cares” and “what’s the point”, you will naturally do nothing.
When you are feeling positive, your world is your oyster. You feel hopeful, inspired, and creative. You take steps to create momentum in your job search by applying, networking and even posting about your career journey on Linkedin.
Your mindset determines your actions in your job search.
Common mindset traps
When embarking on the job search, there are commonly held beliefs that can determine your mindset going into the job search.
Here’s a few mindset traps:
I don’t have enough work experience
No one wants to hear from me
There are few junior jobs
I don’t have a network
My skills from past work don’t apply in tech
When you start your job search with this mindset, you are holding yourself back. These thoughts will show up again and again in your job search to stop you from taking the steps to network, apply, or even interview!
🎯 Don’t block yourself from taking action before you even start job searching. Create a mindset that helps you build confidence from within, not based on external validation.
Reframe your mindset
Build a strong sense of confidence so that you can keep going, even if you don’t get responses the right way. The most important element in the job search is to KEEP SHOWING UP. With a growth mindset, you’ll be able to keep job searching because you BELIEVE in yourself.
Here’s a few affirmations to help reframe your mindset into one where you can feel confident, take action and build momentum:
I bring value to others
I have unique work experience
It’s safe to share about myself
People want to help me
Use these affirmations to create a mindset that instills confidence in your actions.
Let’s look at an example:

After working with a job search coach, Carla shifted her mindset to: My work is valuable. I get paid well for my work.
