Alex’s background is in the US Army, where for six years, he worked as a Medic. In 2021, he pivoted into software engineering by completing a Software Engineering bootcamp for Army veterans.
His first SWE role was at JP Morgan Chase, as part of the Emerging Talent program. Now that he had almost 2 years of work experience as a SWE, he was ready to move into a new role that allowed him to have more impact. He wasn’t sure how to start the job search and wanted to follow a proven approach to make it more efficient.
Alex joined the Social Job Search program in May 2023 and signed an offer in September 2023!
Here’s how it happened.
Alex worked full-time as a SWE throughout his job search, so balancing his work and the job search was important.
Next, we utilized a networking strategy that was focused on his alumni network from coding bootcamp, all former veterans who pivoted into SWE. This strategy allowed him to focus his attention on networking with people who were interested and invested in helping him since they shared similar backgrounds.
During the whole time we worked together, Alex learned how to increase the volume of applications without spending hours, while focusing on reaching out to his alumni network and new connections at target companies.
Within weeks, he was getting interviews!
Every week he would:

✅ outreach to 20+ new people
✅ work on practicing for technical interviews
The Job Offer 🎉
At 14 weeks into the program Alex started interviewing with a startup where one of his mentors from bootcamp worked - and therefore recommended Alex for the open role.
During his time in the program, he worked with a Job Search Coach to:
✅ optimize his LinkedIn profile, portfolio and resume
✅ learn how to use strategic networking to connect with new people
✅ understand how to highlight his SWE skills to communicate his knowledge on the resume, Linkedin profile and Linkedin posts
When looking for a new role, having more impact was high on the list of job criteria, so a startup where he would be coding was a great fit!
Alex signed an offer in Sept 2023 for a base salary of $90K+.
He went from starting a new job search after 2 years in the same company to find a role with a LOT more impact through a referral in his network!
