âI donât know what I need to do to get interviewsâ you may be thinkingâŚ
Honestly, the tech job market was never this crowded, so in 2023, even getting interviews is an achievement.
There are multiple ways to land a job in #tech, here are 3 job search strategies to help land interviews:
Send in job applications like a robot
Reach out to everyone you know and may know in your personal and extended network for info and referrals
Get referrals and intros from people you just met
âď¸ Cold applications
Sending 100s of applications? Go right ahead.
Just donât expect a high hit rate, especially if youâre looking for your 1st or 2nd job in tech. When you send cold applications, you might not get 100s of interviews, but even if 10% of your applications get you an interview, that can be enough to get the right match! (the trick is to apply a LOT if you want to depend on this method - not recommended).
đ Activate your current network
Think you donât know anyone who can help you? Thank again.
So many career changers land jobs that are a referral through someone they knew. Even if your friends donât work in tech, maybe they know someone who does. So donât forget to tell everyone you know that youâre looking đ
âď¸ Network with NEW people
Hiring is a complicated decision.
Most of the time hiring is done in teams that evaluate candidates on skills and culture fit. What else goes into hiring? Elements like truly connecting with someone during a conversation, showing up with energy and enthusiasm, asking specific questions, and more.
While hiring can seem black and white, itâs a complicated process where a group of people decides who they want to bring on as a new team member. Wouldnât you want to hire someone with the right skills AND you liked as a person? Most hiring teams would.
đ Bonus strategy: Create a personal brand on Linkedin
By posting consistently and often on Linkedin, you can have recruiters and opportunities come to YOU. Post about your projects, skills, interests and more. Post 1-3x per week, every week to build an audience and momentum. Everyone loves to follow along with someone elseâs story!
The key is to BE YOURSELF, to let your personality shine through, even if you are feeling a bit awkward and not familiar with everything you are being asked.
